The Life and Death of Frida Kahlo
Karen and David Crommie, USA 1966, 40’
This is the extraordinary film that started it all: the original documentary that brought Frida Kahlo out from under the shadow of her husband, Diego Rivera, and into the glare of world recognition. When Hayden Herrera saw it at a screening in New York she was motivated to write her iconic book, Frida (Harper & Row, 1983). Narrated by the eleven people who knew Kahlo best, the film traces a life that wavered on the cutting edge of art and politics during the 1930s.
Plus Frida Kahlo's Corset
Liz Crow, UK 2000, 10’
A short, experimental drama that follows Kahlo’s journey of transformation and refutes the picture of her life as one of tragedy and suffering.
Sponsored by HSBC with additional support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mexico, Conaculta-Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía,
and Filmoteca de la UNAM.
