The Store
Frederick Wiseman, USA 1983, 118’
The Store, Frederick Wiseman’s first colour film, stands in stark contrast to his meditations on despair such as Welfare (1975). Taking his camera into the gilded halls of Neiman Marcus, the legendary temple to conspicuous consumption in Dallas, Texas, the director trails the activities of both store employees and the well-heeled customers they serve. Depicting startling scenes, such as a group of saleswomen dutifully being led through a series of ‘smile exercises’, The Store scrutinises the consumer rituals through which the American elite adorns itself.
