‘One should not only photograph things for what
they are but for what else they are,’ wrote the American photographer
Minor White. From the natural to the industrial, the ancient to
the ephemeral, this workshop will be a subjective, humorous jaunt
through the history of object photography. Approaching still life
as a genre encompassing objects of cultural value, sentimental value,
or no value at all, it will juggle images of the vernacular and
the peculiar, looking at instances when the subject of an image
may not be the object defined, nor the object quite what it seems.
Between the two sessions participants will be asked to take and collect photographs to be the starting point for a discussion about how we perceive and relate to different kinds of objects today.
No photographic experience is necessary but patricipants will need to use their own camera, either manual or automatic between sessions.
