Adapted from Moravia’s novel A Ghost at Noon,
Le Mépris is considered by many to be Godard's best and
most complete film. This psycho-drama of a woman overcome by contempt for
her husband is played out against the background of an international film
production of The Odyssey and stars cinematic icons Brigitte Bardot and
Jack Palance, with Fritz Lang delightfully playing himself as the director.
By casting the young Bardot, Godard encapsulates the style of the early
sixties and promotes a new kind of star image which would come to dominate
fashion pages around the world.
