Cruel and Tender: The Real in the Twentieth-Century Photograph
is the first Tate exhibition dedicated to photography. David
Campany and Emma Dexter will explore themes
and motifs of the exhibition, and consider its importance for the
histories of both photography and exhibition making. They will ask
what is meant by a ‘documentary style’, examining the
oscillation between engagement and estrangement in many works in
the exhibition.
David Campany is Senior Lecturer in the History and
Theory of Photography at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design.
He is author of Art and Photography (Phaidon 2003), and
a contributor to the Cruel and Tender catalogue. Emma Dexter
is Senior Curator at Tate Modern, and co-curator of Cruel
and Tender.
Tate Modern Starr Auditorium
