Material Stories was the title
for the Out of Hours Primary Schools Projects taking place at Tate
Modern in the autumn and spring terms of 2002/3.
During two 10 week projects pupils from Snowsfields Primary School
and St. Joseph's Primary School worked with artists Michaela
Ross and Marianne Holm Hansen to examine the properties, lifecycles
and meanings of materials. Whereas in the previous two projects
(Magnificent Materials 1 and 2) the pupils started by examining
the physical properties of materials, in Material Stories they
were encouraged to think
about their
associations.
With this new focus in mind, activities centred around ideas
of narrative and history with a greater emphasis on poetic
language.
During the projects the pupils investigated and responded to
art works from Tate Modern's collection through gallery activities
and by creating their own object-based works as well as digital
animations click on Snowsfields
Primary School and St. Joseph's Primary School buttons
above. To see some of the object-based works produced and drawings
resulting from gallery activities and material investigations

Material Stories contains
more images of studio work and activities as well as an outline
of the project.
A very big thank you to teachers, families and funders for their
enthusiasm and generous support.
