Mark Rothko
Untitled (Study for Seagram Mural) 1958–9 Collection of Kate Rothko Prizel © 2008 by Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko |
This event is the premiere of British composer Jim Aitchison's response in music to Rothko's 'Seagram Murals'. It is performed in front of Rothko's great paintings in the Tate exhibition by the Kreutzer Quartet, one of Europe's leading chamber ensembles, with world renowned horn player, Michael Thompson, and features the remarkable voice of countertenor Nicholas Clapton.
Aitchison's composition is intimately derived from the expressive and structural content of Rothko's paintings, creating a multi-sensory experience from the convergence of sound and image. The composer is a Henry Moore Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music.
