American artist Matt Mullican gives a performance while in a state of hypnosis. These performances are a crucial aspect of the artist's work and he uses them as a way of developing ideas through the process of taking on the characteristics of other people whilst he is hypnotised.
The artist, whose work also includes painting, drawing and installation, has long been fascinated by the relationship between information and perception as it is filtered through emotive or unconscious associations. The symbols, shapes and repetitive patterns that he paints during the performance make such concerns visibly manifest.
UBS Openings is an exciting programme of events and activities which form part of the partnership between Tate Modern and UBS, a global financial services firm, over three years.
