To mark the opening of Tate Modern’s exhibition, Common Wealth the show’s curator Jessica Morgan and art historian Mark Godfrey discuss issues of exchange, communication, and interactivity within the work of five international contemporary artists. Thomas Hirschhorn, whose installations are included in the exhibition, has suggested it features artists who are interested in making art politically rather than making political art. What does such a distinction mean, and how is it manifested in particular artworks? Such questions will provide a basis for debate around the significance of participation and collaboration in recent artwork; the role of global economics in present artistic thought; and the possibility of a use-value for contemporary art.
