Emma Dexter, Senior Curator at Tate Modern, leads a tour of the Luc Tuymans exhibition, revealing his distinctive contribution to the medium of painting.
Emphasising the tension between tradition and innovation in Tuymans’ work, she will focus on the way he uses bleached out and faded colours to suggest the condition and quality of memory. Tuymans often deals with difficult subject matter, from Christ’s Passion to the Holocaust or the colonial experience of the 1950s Belgian Congo. Such works will be considered alongside ones which hint at the terrors lurking in the everyday.
