Commentators have been announcing the end of painting
ever since cameras were first made available. But after years of
being challenged, attacked, dismissed and subverted, the practice
is clearly still alive and well. Indeed a series of recent exhibitions
such as Painting at the Edge of the World, Painting on the Move
and Urgent Painting have shown it to be as vital and relevant
as ever.
This six-session course will consider how contemporary
artists have stretched the definition of painting beyond its literal
and conceptual boundaries. Drawing on the Luc
Tuymans exhibition and the permanent collection displays at
Tate Modern, participants will address both technical and thematic
concerns, and explore how artists working with paint make use of
many of the most recent image production techniques.
The course will include a contribution by the painter
Glenn Brown, whose complex borrowings from fine art and popular
culture led him to be short-listed for the Turner Prize in 2000.

the Luc Tuymans
exhibition and drinks each week in the Tate Modern bar
