Passionate Encounters: Film Fashion Art Architecture

From the very beginnings of cinema, art and design have shaped what we
see – either directly as subject matter or, less obviously, as part
of the magic of production. Whether you consider cinema to be the synthesis
of all the arts or, like Bresson in the Thirties, as an uncomfortable amalgam
of theatre, the novel and painting, it is undeniable that the cross-fertilisation
of film and artistic practice can result in dazzling collaborations. This
short season aims to showcase films that articulate the way fashion, art
and design can be transformed when woven into the language of cinema.
This season is organised to coincide with the publication
of a new bfi catalogue, Art and Design: A Source Book,
which imaginatively details over 1500 relevant titles from the bfi's
film collections, enabling programmers, teachers and researchers to explore
the dialogues between film on the one hand, and art, architecture and fashion
on the other. The following programme, centred around Cocteau's seminal
Orphée, newly re-released by the bfi, is highly
eclectic, providing just a taste of what the bfi's extensive holdings
have to offer.
