Still from From The Pole To The Equator

Using material from the archives of Luca Comerio,
a pioneer of Italian documentary, the filmmakers have hand-tinted,
slowed down and reworked spectacular footage shot literally from
the Pole to the Equator around 1910. Scenes featuring Arctic whalers,
Tibetan monks, Cossack horsemen and British India at tea time are
set to a minimalist electronic score. What results is a fascinating
account of the colonial psyche - 'like tuning into the television
of some alternative universe.' (J Hoberman).
