A key figure in American avant-garde cinema, Paul Sharits’s later work moved from medium specific ‘pure-films’ to more installation-based ‘locational’ work that expanded cinema beyond it’s traditional components. This two-screen film is a ‘chronicle’ of a visit Sharits made to Romania in 1977 to experience three of Brancusi's most famous sculptures: The Endless Column, The Gate of the Kiss, and The Table of Silence. These works span the boundaries of the rural town of Tirgu Jiu and – while aligned in a (virtual) straight line – cannot all be seen from one single point of view. The film examines the temporal unfolding as one moves through the town to experience their relationship.
‘There should be other films like this about
works of art.’ Lynda Benglis, Sculptor.
