Put About: Contemporary Independent Arts Publishing

A timely discussion on independent publishing and publishing by artists, focusing on books where the makers control every aspect of production and distribution. The symposium will explore why publishers and artists feel compelled to deliver such materials, together with the economic models and audiences that can ensure their cultural presence. Participants include: Michael Bracewell (writer, UK); Jeremy Deller (artist, UK); Matthew Higgs (publisher, critic and curator, UK/USA); Christoph Keller (publisher, Germany); Stéphanie Moisdon (curator and co-founder of Bureau des Videos, France); Sina Najafi (editor-in-chief of Cabinet magazine, USA), Polly Staple (writer and curator, UK), Lionel Bovier (Switzerland), Dr Cornelia Lauf (Italy) and Ingrid Swenson (UK).

The event marks the launch of Put About: A Critical Anthology on Independent Publishing (Book Works 2004).

Speakers and panel members include:

Lionel Bovier (Switzerland), is an independent critic and curator. He founded JRP Editions, an independent publishing structure specialising in artists' books and multiples and now directs JRP / Ringier Kunstverlag.

Michael Bracewell(UK), a writer, the author of novels and non-fiction. He is also a regular contributor to amongst, other publications; Tate magazine, The Guardian and The Los Angeles Times and is currently working on a book about Roxy Music.

Jeremy Deller(UK), an artist based in London, who has been nominated for this year’s Turner Prize. He practice spans a variety of media including books, stickers, film and prints. He is co-founder of Folk Archive, an attempt to collect and show current folk art from all parts of Britain and Ireland.

Matthew Higgs(UK/USA), an independent curator, artist, writer and publisher. He contributes to magazines including Artforum and is the Director and Chief Curator at White Columns in New York. He is also the publisher of The Oakland Wedge. Matthew Higgs will chair this event.

Christoph Keller(Germany), a publisher. His imprint Revolver produces a wide variety of publications with international artists and he has organized the touring exhibition, Kiosk – Modes of Multiplication, a non-representational and informative selection of independent publishing projects.

Dr Cornelia Lauf (Italy) is an art historian and independent curator. She is the founder of Camera Oscura, an alternative space in Tuscany, and was editor-in-chief of Imschoot, Uitgevers for almost a decade. Lauf writes extensively, and has published many books on and with artists. She is a co-founder of twostarbooks.com

Stéphanie Moisdon(France), a curator, writer and lecturer. She is a founder member of Bureau Des Videos, an agency for the production and distribution of unlimited editions of artists’ videos and was one of the curators of Manifesta 4.

Sina Najafi(USA), co-editor in chief of the quarterly magazine Cabinet and co-director of Immaterial Incorporated, an artists’ and writers’ collective in New York. He is also a lecturer and writer.

Polly Staple(UK), is currently the Curator for Frieze Art Fair and Editor
at Large, frieze. She has been the co-editor of Untitled art magazine, curator at Cubitt gallery, London and publisher of the occasional zine Saturday.

Ingrid Swenson  (UK) is a freelance curator and the Director of Peer, an independent visual arts organisation that commissions and produces projects in all media. Some recent notable projects include the book Art for All? Their policies and our culture (2001), Mike Nelson's installation The Deliverance and the Patience, for the Venice Biennale (2001), Lars Arrhenius' A-Z (2002) and Breda Beban's installation Touchdown (2003).
