John Tagg and Steve Edwards explore
the social and historical significance of nineteenth- and twentieth-century
photographs of workers and working environments, including many of
the iconic images included in Cruel and Tender. John Tagg
is professor of art history at Binghamton University, New York, and
author of Grounds of Dispute: Art History, Cultural Politics and
the Discursive Field (1982) and The Burden of Representation:
Essays on Photographies and Histories (1988). Steve Edwards is
research lecturer in art history at The Open University, editor of
Art and its Histories: a Reader (1999) and author of Photography,
Allegory & Labour (Art Journal, Summer 1996).
The Camera at Work series explores historical,
sociological and aesthetic issues related to the photographic representation
of work. It coincides with Tate Modern’s major exhibition
Cruel and Tender:
The Real in the Twentieth-Century Photograph. See Courses
