Out of Bounds

Saturday 27 - Sunday 28 September

For one weekend only and as a contribution to the launch of the Cultural Olympiad, the ICA and Tate will join organisations across the country in opening up parts of their buildings that are normally out of bounds to the public. Out of Bounds is a specially conceived collaborative season of art events taking place on the last weekend of September that will encourage people to explore hidden, backstage and non-public sites at the participating institutions, through small interventions, artists' tours, screenings, commissions or other events.

Participating organisations are Cornerhouse, Manchester, The Exchange, Penzance, FACT, Liverpool, Wysing Arts, Cambridge and, in London, the ICA and Tate Modern. The ICA will stage an outdoor sound installation by Scottish rising star, the artist Susan Philipsz on the usually private roof terrace overlooking the Mall, while Tate will present the first ever commission in the oil tanks at Tate Modern with UBS Openings: Saturday Live, a performance by artists Bonnie Camplin and Paulina Olowska.

Wysing Arts Centre will turn itself Inside Out by inviting its 24 studio artists to take over unseen and often non-public spaces including its 17th century farmhouse, offices, stairwells, and greenhouses, with large-scale installations, video, sculpture and painting as well as live music and screenings. At the Newlyn Art Gallery in Penzance on Sunday there will be a one night festival in bunker rooms beneath the new galleries in a former telephone exchange. The Victorian basement of the gallery remains unchanged and artists will create site-specific art works in the warren of subterranean rooms.

In Manchester at Cornerhouse artist S Mark Gubb will take visitors on a special one-off performance tour through the hidden parts of the gallery. While in Liverpool, FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) will grant exclusive behind-the-scenes access to fifteen golden ticket winners to experience and learn the secrets of filmmaking.
