Chris Burden is a seminal figure who emerged as part of the 1970s American art scene and gained international recognition as one of the most influential artists of his generation. His investigations into capitalism, autonomy and military force often leads him to utilise the body as site for exploring ideas about safety, risk and psychological endurance.

One of the pioneering artists who challenged the relationship between artist and spectator, Burden readily tests the institutional boundaries of what constitute acceptable practice using shock tactics as acts of resistance.

Burden has exhibited internationally for almost four decades and is currently showing at the South London Gallery. Burden gives a talk on his work, and this is followed by a question-and-answer session chaired by Margot Heller, director of the South London Gallery.
