Photographic images emerging from the Balkan states are frequently fraught with complexities resulting from the region's turbulent history, geographical position and the fusion of ideological systems inherited from Communist, Ottoman and Byzantine pasts. Ironically, the current situation in the Balkans presents diversities that defy the stereotypes of corruption, violence and exoticism usually associated with issues of gender and religious ethnicities.

Four internationally acclaimed female photographic artists from the region, Aydan Murtezaoglu, Tanja Dabo, Alexandra Croitoru and Aurora Dediu, discuss the various incongruities associated with the Balkans in this panel discussion, chaired by artist, theorist and curator Suzana Milevska.
