In conjunction with Tate Modern’s display of work by contemporary Belgian artist Jan De Cock, Francesco Manacorda, a London-based freelance writer and curator, elaborates on the relationship between art and architecture in De Cock’s work.

The artist’s large-scale installations are made in response to the architecture of the site he is working in and are both aesthetic interventions in the space as well as performing a utilitarian function. For Tate Modern, De Cock has created a series of installations and sculptures which extend beyond the Level 2 Gallery and into the circulation routes used by visitors.

The talk explores De Cock’s recreation of space and his occupation of the museum architecture through a viral proliferation of sculptural elements. The role of this intervention and integration in relation to the museum as a monument is also questioned.
