Martin Hentschel on Joseph Beuys
Martin Hentschel is Director of Art Museums in Krefeld and a leading authority on contemporary German art. He was a student of Joseph Beuys from 1970-72 at the Dusseldorf Academy. He experienced first-hand how the artist’s politics infused his teaching, and also the events around Beuys’s expulsion from the academy, in 1972, for breaking its regulations by making his classes open access. Martin Hentschel will talk about these contexts for understanding Beuys and his art, in discussion with Karen Wright from Modern Painters magazine.
