The Films of Polish Women Artists in the 1970s and 1980s
Sunday 7 November 2004, 15.00

When observing Polish art over the last decade, one can discern an increase in the number of women artists using video techniques. This programme of films made in the 1970s and 1980s by Polish women artists is an attempt to establish the genealogy of this phenomenon. The programme provides a comprehensive view of the independent films of the period, from the structural cinema of the early ‘70s to a more expressive and emotional agenda in some of the later works. It features the work of twelve groundbreaking artists: Zofia Kulik, Ewa Partum, Natalia LL, Anna Kutera, Katarzyna Hierowska, Jadwiga Singer, Jolanta Marcolla, Teresa Tyszkiewicz, Ewa Zarzycka, Barbara Konopka, Irena Nawrot, Iwona Lemke-Konart.

This rare screening will be followed by a conversation between the programme’s curator Łukasz Ronduda, the artist Marysia Lewandowska, and the film theorist Elizabeth Cowie. It is shown in connection with the Tate Modern exhibition Time Zones.
