How do we know how to engage with modern and contemporary
artworks that break with aesthetic traditions? Are we dependent
on the way in which they are presented to us by curators, critics
or theorists, or is there a way in which works of art establish
their own terms of engagement?
This course will consider how different works of art seem to demand
different modes of attention. It will examine the relationship between
art objects and the institutions that interpret them. Particular
emphasis will be placed on the tensions that often exist between
works of art and museums, as well as the efforts by artists, curators
and critics to exacerbate or overcome these.
Most sessions take place in the gallery spaces at
Tate Modern. Participants may be asked to do a small amount of reading
between weeks.
