Sunday 27 June 2004 - Thursday 30 September 2004 Luc Tuymans is ‘the Polanski of contemporary painting, looking through the lens that isolates him from a terrible world which is entirely his own’. – Dominic van den Boogerd Luc Tuymans’ work begins where modernist painting made its fundamental gestures of destruction. Simultaneously mourning painterly representation while constructing its failure, his canvases frequently address the seemingly inexpressible horrors of history. Originally considering a career as a filmmaker, Tuymans juxtaposes isolated images to create fragmentary narratives that capture a sense of potential menace. This film programme responds to Tuymans’ longstanding fascination with both cinema and the intolerable ambivalence between banality and horror.
