The Brancusi Trial

On Sunday 9 November 2003 the Radio 3 Sunday Feature 'The Brancusi Trial' was broadcast. It was produced for BBC Radio 3 by Above the Title Productions.

Writer and barrister John Mortimer tells the story of one of the most influential art trials ever conducted: Brancusi v United States.

75 years ago Brancusi had to fight for his name and reputation in a trial which became the cause celèbre of its day. This extraordinary case resulted in a court of law having to answer that most elusive question - what is art?

Using transcripts of the trial which the programme-makers unearthed last year in a personal archive, Mortimer analyses a remarkable episode which transformed 20th century art.
