Building instructions for Rough-and-Ready Chair


Materials:

1"x1" softwood, or similar wood
12 mm OSB plywood
32 screws No. 8 x 11/2"
blanket
strapping material

Tools:

Saw
3 m.m. drill
screwdriver
pencil
tape measure

Stage 1

Cut wood for sides to length:

A back legs, 2 off, length 847mm

B front legs, 2 off, length 460mm

C top horizontal side, 2 off, length 470mm

D lower horizontal side, 2 off, length 455 mm

E side diagonal, 2 off, length 540 mm

Assemble sides:

Lay front and back legs (A and B) flat. Fix horizontals C and D in place.

Top C 440mm from bottom end A.

Top D 104mm from bottom end A.

Fix together with screws (pre-drill a hole through the softwood to prevent it from splitting).

Fix diagonal in position (E) as on drawing.

Stage 2

Cut wood for front and back horizontals:

For F, G, H and I 4 off, length 380mm

For J 1 off, length 340mm

Fix the front and back horizontals in position with screws:

Top F 116mm from top of A.

G and H on top of C.

I on top of D, 80mm from front of D.

J behind A, above D.

Stage 3

Cut wood for front and back diagonals:

K 1 off 440mm

L 1 off 350mm

Make sure the frame is standing straight on a flat surface.

Fix front and back diagonals to frame.

Stage 4

Cut wood for seat and back-rest:

seat: 450 x 380mm

back: 250 x 380mm

Screw seat and back to frame.

Stage 5

To get the right seat angle, cut 17mm from bottom of back legs (A).

Stage 6

Fold blanket to size: +1100 x 400mm.

Strap blanket to frame.
