The domestic interiors we inhabit and objects we depend upon have provided a rich source of material for artists since the seventeenth century and the emergence of still-life painting. This temporary display in the Turbine Hall explores how more recent artists have approached this subject. Bill Woodrow's ingenious sculptures are recycled from consumer durables like washing machines, while Tony Cragg assembles domestic junk into images which suggest the humble origins of their disparate parts. Works by Mona Hatoum and Louise Bourgeois subvert the notion of the home as a protective environment, while Rachel Whiteread's casts of the spaces beneath tables prompt us to consider our physical relationship to the spaces which are such a part of our lives but often go unnoticed.
