Jeff Wall: Photographs 1978-2004

Biography

Jeff Wall was born in 1946 in Vancouver, Canada, where he currently lives and works. He studied art history at the University of British Colombia in Vancouver (1964–70) and undertook postgraduate studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London (1970–3).

Wall's early work addressed Conceptual art via photography. In 1969–70, he produced a small brochure, Landscape Manual, containing black-and-white photographs of Vancouver taken from the window of a car. In 1976 he began colour photography, and soon mounted large colour transparencies in lightboxes. In 1991 Wall started using digital montage techniques, and he began producing large black-and-white photographs in 1995.
