Many of the photographs that Wall made during the 1980s begin by looking at the economic dialogues and conflicts of the era, presenting aspects of an unfolding social crisis. Trân Dúc Ván is a Vietnamese name that could be that of the main figure depicted. Leaning against the tree, he seems to be looking up at the sky, as if caught in a reverie, unnoticed. There is no communication between the two figures in this scene, and oppositions of race and class are alluded to.
