Towards the end of the 1970s, the dominance of conceptual art was challenged by a return to painting that was energetic and narrative. The moment was caught in an exhibition called A New Spirit in Painting. Looking back over more than twenty five years, this display recaptures that moment through exemplary works by a generation of artists from Italy, Germany, America and Britain.

Taking the opportunity to combine paintings from The UBS Art Collection with significant Tate works, the display continues the sequence associated with the UBS and Tate partnership, opening up art to new audiences.
