Like many of the artists in this exhibition,
Helbig works in several disciplines, primarily
drawing, painting and sculpture. In the
sculptures shown here, he takes existing
objects, such as a sculpture of a crouching
figure, and transforms them into hybrids,
poised on the brink of abstraction. Brutal in
appearance, these mutated, biomorphic shapes
are at the same time strangely beguiling.
The method of displaying the artworks is an
important part of Helbig’s creative process. He
hand-crafts the plinths for his sculptures and
the frames for his paintings, adding to the
rustic aesthetic of his work.
