Jurczak’s works seem to refer to folk-tales and
myths but in fact the figures and settings come
directly from her imagination. Her imagery
is quirky and surreal. The use of etching and
muted, faded colours means that her work
appears much older than it really is. In this
menacing world, birds and animals often
take on human characteristics. The birds in
Powieszone are hung by the neck from plaits of
human hair, a morbid image that stops short of
narrative, leaving space for the viewer to create
their own interpretation.
