Room 1: Flowers

Warhol began the Flowers series in 1964 reportedly after his friend, the curator Henry Geldzahler,
suggested that he should address a positive, life-affirming subject.
He produced over 900 of the paintings in just a few months.
They recycle the genre of still life painting for the flower power generation.
The source for these silkscreened paintings was a photograph of hibiscus blossoms, which appeared in
Modern Photography magazine to illustrate an article about colour printing.
