Flux-Olympiad
Sunday 25 May 2008, 10.00–17.00
Monday 26 May 2008, 10.00–17.00
The Turbine Hall will be transformed to house the first realisation of a Fluxolympiad, for which Fluxus artist Larry Miller has programmed a series of Flux-Sports events (in which both ‘athletes’ and visitors will be able to take part) including soccer played on stilts, obstacle shoe races, slow speed bicycle races, and the balloon shotput, stilt race, slow bicycle race and many more.
Visitors will be able to join in a variety of sports over the weekend including invisible hurdle race, 100 meter metronome run, team ski run, tennis basketball, prepared badminton (with extended length racquets or racquets with balloons, 200 meter balloon dash, team loop race and others. All weekend visitors can play Flux Chess, Blow Soccer and Prepared Ping Pong.
Founding Fluxus artist George Maciunas (1931–78) conceived the idea of a Fluxolympiad in the 1960s but this event has never been fully realised. Maciunas aimed to bring the sensibility of artistic practice to each activity he undertook, be it a wedding, banquet, clinic or sport, with the objective of demonstrating that anyone can be an artist, therefore ultimately undermining the role of the artist.
To participate please sign up at The Long Weekend information point in Turbine Hall on the day.
