Composer's Notes

Replika by Achim Wollscheid

An initial sound (by the ensemble or the audience) is recorded transformed and re-played. The resulting sonic structure serves as an (audible) score for the ensemble to continue. The continuation is again recorded, transformed and replayed. Thus the piece will result in a continuing interchange.

Compositional Score

The scores could take any form, from verbal instruction, found sound and poetry, to other music, so long as it is delivered exclusively in audio, with no written text, conducting, physical cues or gestures.

Audio Score:

The Score itself was an interactive process by which the ensemble played... which was in turn, recorded directly onto a computer, operated by Achim sitting in the audience, running PD (Pure Data). The sound was processed in real-time and played back to the room, from speakers at the back of the auditorium. The musicians would then respond and transform their reply. And so the piece evolved a live dialogue between musicians and composer. See above under Performance Archive for the final version performed live at Tate Modern.

Immediately below is a recording of Achim Wollscheid rehearsing with the ensemble on the day of the performance. See further below to download and install the interactive application Achim developed for the work.
