Contested Territories: Ron Arad, Deyan Sudjic and Tom Dixon: On Design

Date:  21 February 2007
Venue:  Tate Britain

As fashion designers build buildings, product designers refuse to produce multiples, and architects are celebrated for their aesthetics rather than their social ambitions, how do we define the role of design today? What are the fundamental principles that design needs to adhere to and build on? Where might its role fit within society? Are the endless rounds of museumification, design fairs and awards perverting design into a component of sound bite culture?  Is it now the case that impressions rule and appearance drive production and investment?

Designers Ron Arad and Tom Dixon are joined by Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum to talk about the point of contemporary design.
