Double Indemnity: Todd Haynes/Edward Hopper: Todd Haynes with Richard Dyer

Date:  4 June 2004
Venue:  Tate Modern

Highly acclaimed for films such as Far From Heaven (2002), SAFE(1995) and Poison (1991), Todd Haynes is one of the most important contemporary American filmmakers. His characters’ visual and emotional isolation; the lush, static poignancy of his settings; and his ability to mine the uncanny, paranormal nature of American life all resonate strongly with the work of Edward Hopper.

In conjunction with Tate Modern’s Hopper exhibition, Haynes has selected a film programme to engage Hopper’s and his connections to cinema and visual culture. Richard Dyer, Professor of Film Studies at University of Warwick and author of White and The Matter of Images will join Haynes to discuss issues raised by his work and the Hopper film programme.
