Friends and Foes:
William Michael Rossetti, 1867

William Michael Rossetti wrote
"Of the water we are not so certain as of the other points of rendering: its colour is a dusky purple - we will not venture to
say untruthful, but scarcely familiar to the eye, and the flow is so slight as hardly to enhance the appearance of liquidity."

Fine Art, Chiefly Contemporary, p.211, quoted in The Pre-Raphaelite Landscape, Allen Staley,
2nd ed. New Haven, London and Yale University Press 2001, p.29.

(William Michael Rossetti, the brother of Dante Gabriel Rossetti was part of the
Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
