Damien Hirst: Pharmacy

Installation

Family

This is aimed at 8-12 year olds with an adult joining in to discuss and think about Damien Hirst's artwork Pharmacy online. You can start with the Introduction and then go on to the Installation and Arranging games.

Introduction

Have a look at Pharmacy online.
What is the difference between a real pharmacy or chemist and Damien Hirst's Pharmacy?
Can you name five things that are different?
Look carefully at the objects in Pharmacy. Would you expect to see every one of them in a real chemist shop? What seems out of place?
Name any thing that seems out of place. If you don't know what they are called, do you know what they do?
Where might you expect to find those things?
Do you expect to see this kind of thing - a room that has the illusion of being a real pharmacy - in an art gallery, or on an art gallery website?
Can you remember any other artworks that have objects of everyday life in them? What were the objects that the artist used or painted or sculpted?
You can click to have a look at the Tate Collection section of the Tate website for inspiration.

When you create art projects at school, do you make art about things that are medical? Do you think this is an unusual subject for art?

You may want to find out about other artists who are concerned with ideas of health and healing. Try the Tate Collection subject search. There's a medical category under 'Objects' and also one under 'Work and occupations'.
