Damien Hirst: Pharmacy

Schools Activities
Introduction

This section offers three different workshops ideas around Damien Hirst's Pharmacy. There are discussion points and activities as well as classroom based ideas. We imagine each workshop would take one lesson or one hour. You could build it into a work scheme or choose to investigate these ideas as a one-off visit to the online Pharmacy.
Two of the themes relate in particular to the wider syllabus, including PSHE Healthy Living, Religious Education and Science.
These may include ideas for teaching subjects outside Art, Design, Technology through the medium of the visual arts.
They're just ideas for you to adapt to the needs of your class, as you understand them.
Please ensure that the students have all seen the Pharmacy online project before beginning these workshops. You can get all the information you will need for these workshops either from Pharmacy online or other parts of the Tate website.
You may prefer to print out the following workshop plans in order to use them.

Theme ideas
  • Health and Healing (Key Stage 2)
This session is aimed at KS2 and looks at Damien Hirst's Pharmacy in the wider context of medicine and healing.
It may have useful links to the Science curriculum and PSHE.
  • Mortality (Key Stage 3 / 4)
This is aimed at KS3/4 and above and can be a useful way of looking at Religious Education and philosophical issues through contemporary art. It could also suggest a different way of looking at art itself.
Warning: some difficult issues are raised in this session and you should consider whether talking about medicine and drugs is appropriate for your class.
  • The Idea of Installation (Key Stage 4)
This is aimed at KS4 and above but may have ideas that can be adapted to a wider age range. It explores ideas of installation, arrangement and interpretation.
