4 December 1992 - 28 January 1993
This was the first installation of Pharmacy and the artist
cut two holes into each of the two windows to allow insects to enter.
This device was meant to link the installation to the world beyond
the gallery.
The size of the space allowed for 14 medicine cabinets, the insect-o-cutor
suspended from the ceiling, four apothecary bottles - arranged from
left to right, seen as if standing behind the desk: Water (blue),
Air (yellow), Fire (red), Earth (green) - four stools with honeycombs
and one desk with accessories.
Hirst has said: 'It's like ideas coming
in from outside the gallery, flies, butterflies, whatever, allowing
inspiration to come in from the outside, like holes in the head
for eyes or like the holes bored in the skulls of living people
in the Middle Ages to let evil out.'
