Damien Hirst: Pharmacy

Installation

Tate Gallery, London, 1999

Tate Gallery : Image 1: Image 2

15 February - 2 May 1999

When shown at the Tate Gallery (now Tate Britain) at Millbank, Hirst had another different space to contend with. This time the medicine cabinets numbered sixteen, two of which were closed; and the apothecary bottles were arranged in a slightly different order: Earth (green), Air (yellow), Fire (red), Water (blue). The artist felt that the rats had not worked in the Dallas exhibition so he didn't include them in the Tate installation. Since there were no windows to allow flies through, as in New York, he decided that this time the visitors would metaphorically 'act as the flies'.
