On 29 May, Tate Modern will present the new Level 2 exhibition, Haris Epaminonda, VOL. VI, the latest in the artist’s series of ‘Volumes’. Epaminonda has created an installation akin to a three-dimensional collage that consists mainly of found objects and images which forge imaginary journeys through distant times and places. Level 2 is Tate Modern’s space for emerging artists, dedicated to experimental ideas, themes and trends in international contemporary art.
Wooden carvings, clay vases, statuettes and pages of books are taken out of their context and refigured, creating uncanny juxtapositions that offer new associations and readings. Bringing together objects from around the world, the artist purposefully avoids revealing the history of each component inviting viewers to engage with the work drawing from their own cultural and social experience.
The installation continues with a new film made by the artist, depicting a lone zebra. The music that accompanies the film has been specially created by ‘Part Wild Horses Mane On Both’. Belonging to a series of short sequences filmed in different locations over the last three years, the film works in a similar way to the rest of the exhibition as each excerpt fuses another element to her overall ‘collection’ of images and objects.
Born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1980, Haris Epaminonda now lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Epaminonda represented Cyprus in the 2007 Venice Biennale and had a solo exhibition at Malmo Konsthall, Sweden in 2009. She was also exhibited in the new ‘Frame’ section at the Frieze Art Fair last year.
