Wayne Hemingway and his son Jack have put a radical new slant on the current Tate Collection display DLA Piper Series: This is Sculpture by transforming the gallery into a real life ‘silent disco’. By taking over 20 figurative sculptures from the Tate Collection and adding a light-up disco dance floor, mirror balls and lighting design by Kathrine Sandys, Wayne and Son have created a completely new interactive gallery environment that has been a hit with visitors since it opened in May. A day of special events on Thursday 12 November will pay homage to the Sculpture Remixed gallery and bring together art, design and music: Local DJs launch their new playlists for the gallery space in a marathon set and Wayne Hemingway shares his ambitious ideas for art from the Tate Collection.
From 18.00 – 19.30 on Thursday 12 November visitors will have the chance to meet acclaimed designer Wayne Hemingway and find out more about his ambitious approach to the presenting art from the Tate Collection. In an informal discussion Wayne Hemingway will talk about how the silent disco came into being. Wayne Hemingway is the co-founder of HemingwayDesign, which specialises in affordable and social design. He co-founded the acclaimed fashion label Red or Dead, which was sold in 1999 after 21 consecutive catwalk seasons and in 2006 was awarded an MBE for services to design. Wayne also shares a passion for soul music and DJs throughout the UK. Tickets for the event are £6 (£4 concessions) and can be booked by calling Tate Liverpool on 0151 702 7400. Wayne Hemingway and Tate Liverpool have invited local DJs to create playlists for the silent disco space. These playlists will be presented alongside Wayne’s own playlist on the disco headphones that visitors wear around the gallery space. These new playlists will be launched on 12 November with a marathon set by local DJs, starting at midday and running until 21.00. At this special launch party, enjoy brand new play lists live from renowned local musicians including DJ Yousef, Hot Club de Paris, goFASTER>> and The Hive Collective among many more.
Visitors can hit the dance floor after hours with the legendary DJ Greg Wilson and the Soul Train dancers as the party continues into the evening. Greg began DJing in 1975 and is regarded as one of the most important figures on the UK dance scene, his recent BBC Radio One Essential Mix becoming something of an instant classic. He enjoyed popular residencies in the early eighties at Wigan Pier and Manchester’s influential Legend. A pioneer of mixing in the UK, in 1983 he became the first ‘dance music’ DJ hired for a regular weekly session at Manchester’s now legendary Haçienda club. Greg was instrumental in breaking the new electronic, post-disco records coming out of New York, a sound he has dubbed ‘Electro-Funk’.
