Donations to Tate Library

Donations to Tate Library are welcomed. All relevant titles not already held will be added to the collection.

Donations are at the core of the Library collection. They contribute to the high proportion of titles we hold which are unique to the UK, and to the substantial size of the collection.

Donations and exchange programme

Tate Library exchanges publications with similar art libraries around the world, including our exhibition catalogues. We also welcome donations of current exhibition catalogues from museums and galleries outside this exchange programme.

Libraries sending exchanges and donations are requested to send their publications solely to the following address:

Tate Library
Exchanges / Donations (Indicate as appropriate)
Tate Britain
Millbank
London SW1P 4RG
United Kingdom

Publications sent to other addresses (including Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool or Tate St Ives) will not be made available and exchanges will not be reciprocated.

For more information about the exchange programme, please email library.exchanges@tate.org.uk.

Inter-library loans

Tate Library also lends to other UK libraries via an inter-library loans scheme. Under this scheme, a user of one library can borrow books or receive photocopies of documents that are owned by another library.

Requests for Inter-library loans should be placed with your local library. Please direct your library to the information for borrowing libraries below. Fees may apply.

Information for borrowing libraries

Tate Library offers a full inter-library loans service to libraries within the UK and Republic of Ireland and a photocopy-only service to international libraries. UK and Republic of Ireland libraries must have a British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC) account.

Tate Library charges in line with the BLDSC for items loaned. IFLA vouchers are accepted for international photocopy requests.

Photocopy requests must comply with copyright legislation and can only be used for non-commercial purposes. Requesting libraries must hold a copyright declaration form stating this and signed by their user, or the request will be declined.

All requests must be emailed to inter-libraryloans@tate.org.uk.

Requests must include details of the item, a BLDSC account number (if applicable), a request number and delivery address.

Tate will not lend:

  • Artists’ books
  • Special collections items (listed as ‘V’ items in the catalogue)
  • Audio visual materials
  • Ephemera
  • Oversize items
  • Reference items
  • Whole issues of serials / periodicals / journals
  • Small catalogues (items of less than 16 pages)
  • Sales catalogues

Please note that Tate Library reserves the right to refuse to lend any item.

If you have any enquiries regarding inter-library loans please email inter-libraryloans@tate.org.uk or call the Serials Librarian on +44 (0)20 7887 8836.
