Work in focus – Carlos Garaicoa

The artist as artistic director

I see [myself] like the director of a film sometimes [laughing] – it’s like you just hire everyone and we ... really it’s more than that ... it’s really … it’s taking care of every detail. I would like to – I don’t do it, I tell you – if I don’t have to deal with how to put plastic in the model and I decide every detail. I have suggestions a lot, and I have this model maker – he is a master … he is a fantastic person … he is doing things that nobody [is doing] – we tried so many model makers around and he is unique – he is a really very talented person – to do that but even that we have to control because it is not his … it’s not a personal thing, you know, it is not his idea it is my idea, and that is very difficult to get this collaboration and to get him to do what I really want. And sometimes I am terrible because I change things I decide … a little crazy … I drive them crazy – these people. It’s been like that, because it is very difficult to arrive at something that is a collaboration between four – sometimes you have to leave a little bit … something that you probably … this is not 100% what you want, but this is the suggestion of the architect, and then you say it’s good.
