Discovering the work at the Miami Art Fair Tanya Barson, Curator It was something that we discovered at the Miami art fair, "Art Basel Miami Beach", and we had some funds to go to that fair with, from the Latin American Acquisitions Committee, and also a grant made by the American Fund to support the committee’s work in its first years. And so it was a piece that we found whilst walking around the fair during the preview days. We had to be very quickly into the fair, looking around the fair trying to find, you know, what were the most exceptional pieces, or if there was anything of interest for the Tate at the fair. And this was something we came across very quickly and thought was a really fantastically strong work. The artist, Carlos Garaicoa, is someone that we had been thinking about – whose work is quite familiar because he has an international reputation – but when we saw this piece we thought it was one of the strongest works that he had done to date – or even the strongest work, and so we thought very strongly that it was the right work for Tate to acquire. |
