The AHRB Research Centre for Studies of Surrealism and its Legacies

Tate is a partner, along with the Universities of Essex and of Manchester, in a Research Centre devoted to surrealism and its legacies. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board, the Centre was established in June 2002 and is due to continue for five years. The Director is Professor Dawn Ades (Essex). Dr. David Lomas (Manchester) and Jennifer Mundy (Tate) are Associate Directors. The Centre aims to promote a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary review of surrealism, a movement that has been immensely influential on twentieth-century art. The Centre involves scholars from many different fields, as well as museum curators and conservators. It hosts study days, workshops and conferences, and participates in the organisation of displays and exhibitions. It also produces an on-line journal and supports the publication of translations and new writing in this area. For details of the Centre’s activities, see www.surrealismcentre.ac.uk.
