Frame a View
August 2006, Tate St Ives
Make a simple view finder by cutting a square (5cmx5cm) out of
a piece of sturdy card like a cereal box.
Now use your viewfinder to frame a view either inside or outside.
Hold the viewfinder at arms-length keeping your elbow straight.
Try and make a pencil sketch of this view filling up an A4 sheet.
Don’t put in too much detail – just the outlines.
Now you can add colour by sticking collage onto your drawing.
Tear up scraps of gummed paper or coloured paper, perhaps from
a magazine or newspaper. Use a glue stick to paste the paper onto
the drawing.
Top tips!
- Tear your coloured paper rather than cut it to give your
picture a more natural finish.
This activity comes from Tate St Ives Beach Workshops that take
place daily during August
