Making sculpture-drawings
|
M.A.D. Live
April 2005, Tate Modern
This activity is inspired by music and the way it is made.
We listened to lots of different types of music from Theremin players and cellists to djembe drummers and Django Thief, a hip-hop collective. They all played music for us to draw, move, listen to, and be inspired by. We also had another Theremin (electrical instrument that you play by moving your hands in the air) that we took turns to play, practicing drawing in the sound with our bodies. We then picked up a bag of materials and made 3-D kinetic sculpture-drawings of the music. We hung these on wires so they moved and responded to the vibrations in the room.
We also made slides and projections and drew on Polaroid photos just as they were developing so that the image became distorted and more interesting.
M.A.D. LIVE was co-ordinated by Holly Rolfe and Sevinc Kisacik with the Raw Canvas Team. This event was part of FLYA ( The Festival of London Youth Arts) and the bands that played were Django Thief, The KORI Drummers and man from uranus.
DJ Semtek kept us going in between acts.
We don't think Music And Drawing have ever been so innovative!
Top tips!
- Collect together loads of bits and bobs (we had wire, wooden sticks, plastic shapes, straws, scissors, card and more).
- Put on your favourite song.
- Think about how the music 'moves': does it make big swooshing shapes, or is it jolting and repetitive? How do the sounds fit together?
- Draw these shapes from the music in 3-D with your materials. Think about how the sounds fit together and move -
try and make your 3-D drawing do the same.
- Hang it up so that it can rotate and move freely.
